You have heard people say “just ask Claude,” but you open the app and the empty chat box gives you no clue where to start. That is normal. Claude AI is easy to begin with, and most of the skill comes from knowing a few habits.

This guide shows how to use Claude AI as a complete beginner: how to sign up, how to write a good first prompt, which features are worth trying, and what to double-check. It also marks what is free and what needs a paid plan.

What Is Claude AI? {#what-is}

Claude AI is an AI assistant made by Anthropic. You type a request in plain language, and Claude replies with text, summaries, explanations, code, or other content. It is built for everyday work such as writing, studying, research, and analysis.

You do not need any technical background. If you can write a message to a colleague, you can use Claude AI.

Claude AI Plans at a Glance {#plans}

Start free, then upgrade only if you keep hitting limits. The table uses figures from Anthropic’s help pages.

PlanPrice (US, web)Good to know
Free$0Sign up with an email at claude.ai; usage limits reset every five hours
Pro$20 per monthMore usage per session than Free, plus Claude Code access and priority access in busy periods
Max$100 per monthFive times Pro’s usage; monthly billing only

Anthropic’s pages do not give exact message counts for Free or Pro. Prices can vary by region and by app store, so check claude.ai/upgrade before paying.

Step 1: Sign Up and Choose Where to Use It {#sign-up}

Claude AI

You can use Claude AI on the web at claude.ai, in the Claude desktop app for Mac or Windows, or in the iOS and Android apps.

Two rules apply. You must be in a supported location, and you must be at least 18 years old, according to Anthropic’s getting-started page. Anthropic’s pages I read do not list the supported countries, so check the official list if sign-up fails.

Step 2: Write Your First Prompt {#first-prompt}

Type your request in the chat box and press send. Click the “+” button at the lower left, or type “/”, to see more options.

Anthropic’s own advice for beginners is to start with simple questions, be specific, ask follow-ups, and try different kinds of tasks. Here is a pattern I suggest, which is my advice rather than an Anthropic rule:

  • Say who you are and what you need. “I am a first-year student. Explain inflation in simple words.”
  • Give the format. “Use five bullet points” or “Write under 150 words.”
  • Add the context. Paste the email, the notes, or the topic.

If the first answer is not right, do not start over. Reply with “make it shorter” or “use a friendlier tone.” Claude keeps the conversation in mind, so follow-ups are the fastest way to improve results.

On web and desktop, the model you are using appears below the text box. Click it to open the model selector, where you can also adjust how much effort Claude uses. Which models you can pick depends on your plan.

Step 3: Upload Files and Images {#files}

Claude AI can read what you give it. Anthropic’s help page lists these limits for chat uploads:

  • Up to 20 files per chat, with a 500MB limit per file
  • Documents: PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, ODT, RTF, EPUB, JSON, and XLSX
  • Images: JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP
  • PDFs of 100 pages or fewer are read for both text and visuals; longer PDFs, up to 1,000 pages, are read as text only

XLSX files need code execution and file creation to be switched on in your account. A good beginner task is to upload a long PDF and ask, “Summarize this in ten bullet points and list any deadlines.”

Step 4: Use Web Search for Current Topics {#web-search}

For news, prices, or anything recent, ask Claude to search. Anthropic says to include “Search the web” in your prompt to make sure it does, and you can also tell it not to.

On some accounts you can turn it on from the “+” button and select “Web search.” Anthropic’s page also says that in the newer Claude experience there is no toggle, and Claude searches when it helps. So your screen may differ from older tutorials.

Responses include citations so you can check sources. Web search and page fetching count toward your usage limits, and fetching a long article can use a lot of capacity on free accounts.

Step 5: Try Artifacts {#artifacts}

When you ask for something substantial, such as a document, small tool, diagram, or dashboard, Claude AI can open it beside the chat as an artifact. Anthropic says this typically happens for content that is long, self-contained, and likely to be reused.

You can ask Claude for changes, and docs can be exported to Word, PDF, Markdown, or Google Docs. Creating artifacts in chat works on the Free plan. Starting from a template is on paid plans only, and Anthropic labels templates as beta.

Step 6: Understand Memory and Privacy {#memory-privacy}

Memory. On Free, Pro, and Max, memory is on by default on web, desktop, and mobile, according to Anthropic. Claude saves everyday context such as your role and preferences. You can pause or reset it in Settings, under “Your Claude” (or “Memory” in the older layout). Before sending the first message of a chat, you can also turn memory off for that chat from the “+” menu.

Chat search. Searching your past conversations is a paid-plan feature. Free users do not get it.

Incognito chats. On all plans, the ghost icon in the upper right of a new chat starts a conversation that is not saved to history or memory.

Training setting. On consumer plans, a toggle called “Help Improve our AI models” is under Settings, then Privacy. Turning it off means new chats will not be used for future model training. Data already used remains, and chats flagged by safety systems may still be used for safety work. Check it once and decide for yourself.

Step 7: Check Answers Before You Trust Them {#check}

Claude AI can be wrong. Anthropic’s guidance on reducing hallucinations says its techniques “significantly reduce but do not eliminate” them, and it advises validating critical information yourself.

Three habits from that guidance work well in a normal chat:

  1. Paste the source text and ask Claude to answer only from it.
  2. Tell Claude it may say “I don’t know” or “not found in the document.”
  3. Ask it to give a supporting quote for each claim, then remove any claim it cannot support.

For health, legal, or money decisions, treat Claude AI as a starting point and confirm with a professional or an official source.

My Opinion: The Free Plan Is Enough to Start {#my-opinion}

I have not bought a paid Claude plan so far. I have only used the Free plan, and I have still been getting very good results from it for my work.

So if you cannot afford a paid plan right now, do not feel stuck. You can do a lot with Claude AI for free: writing, summaries, explanations, and file reading. This is my personal opinion, and your results depend on your tasks. If you keep hitting the usage limit, that is the time to think about upgrading.

Conclusion: Start Small, Then Build the Habit {#conclusion}

The easiest way to learn it is to use Claude AI on one real task today: summarize a document, draft an email, or explain a topic you are studying. Keep prompts specific, use follow-ups, and verify anything important.

Features, plan names, and limits change, so if your screen looks different from this guide, check Anthropic’s help center.
